How to Water Orchids Correctly - The Most Important Orchid Skill

Ask any orchid expert what kills the most orchids and they will say the same thing — wrong watering. Specifically, overwatering. Getting the watering right is the single most important skill for growing healthy, long-lived orchids. The good news: once you understand how orchids drink, it becomes completely intuitive.

How Orchids Drink in Nature

Orchids are epiphytes — they grow on tree branches in rainforests. In nature, rain falls, soaks the roots, and then the roots dry out completely in the sun and breeze within hours. They experience clear wet and dry cycles. Your job as a grower is to mimic this pattern.

The Golden Rule of Orchid Watering

Water thoroughly, then let dry before watering again. Never keep the growing medium constantly wet. When you water, pour water generously until it flows freely from the drainage holes. Then wait until the medium is almost completely dry before watering again.

How Often to Water in India

  • Summer (March–June): Every 5–7 days. Heat evaporates moisture quickly.
  • Monsoon (July–September): Reduce watering significantly — the humidity does most of the work. Water only if the medium is fully dry.
  • Winter (October–February): Every 10–14 days. Growth slows and roots absorb less water.

Best Time to Water

Always water in the morning. This gives leaves and the crown (centre of the plant) time to dry during the day. Water sitting in the crown overnight can cause crown rot, which is very serious.

What Kind of Water to Use

  • Best: Rainwater — naturally soft and mineral-rich
  • Good: Tap water left to sit overnight (allows chlorine to evaporate)
  • Avoid: Softened water (high sodium) or water with very high mineral content

Reading the Roots

If you have a clear or semi-transparent pot, watch the root colour. Bright green or white-green roots = well watered and healthy. Silvery-grey roots = the plant is thirsty, time to water. Brown, mushy roots = root rot from overwatering — act immediately.

💡 Simple Test: Lift your orchid pot. If it feels light, it needs water. If it feels heavy, wait. With terracotta pots this test is very reliable.
