Not many people know this, but one of the most beautiful orchids in the world grows naturally in India. The Rhynchostylis, commonly known as the Foxtail Orchid, is native to Northeast India — Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur — and is actually the state flower of Assam and Mizoram.
In local languages it is known as Kopou Phool (Assamese) and it holds deep cultural significance in Northeast Indian festivals. Growing this orchid at home is not just gardening — it is celebrating India's own floral heritage.
What Makes Rhynchostylis Special
- Produces long, drooping flower spikes called racemes loaded with dozens of tiny, waxy flowers.
- The fragrance is extraordinary — sweet, strong, and long-lasting. One plant in bloom can perfume an entire room.
- Most common colours are white with purple/pink spots. Some varieties are all-white or all-purple.
- Blooms once a year, usually in spring (February–April) — but the wait is absolutely worth it.
Growing Rhynchostylis in India
- Light: Bright, filtered light. Semi-shaded balcony or under shade net is ideal. Avoid harsh afternoon sun.
- Watering: Water generously during summer and monsoon. Reduce in winter. Never let the roots completely dry out.
- Medium: Grow in a basket with coco husk chips, or mount on a wooden slab. Excellent drainage is key.
- Humidity: Loves high humidity (60–80%) — very easy to maintain during Indian monsoons.
- Temperature: Tolerates Indian heat very well — does not need special cooling.
